Can be mistaken for

Field Pansy, which has smooth true leaves.
Wall Speedwell, which has smaller dicotyledon leaves and true leaves.

Characteristics

Cotyledons
Broad egg-shaped with entire leaf margins. Stalked. Smooth surface; short hairs on the stalk. Length approx. 4.5 mm.

True leaves
Egg-shaped with roughly toothed leaf margins. Stalked. Hairy surface. Length approx. 7-11 mm.

Mature plant
The species is a low-growing plant with 20-30 cm long, trailing stems. The largest diameter of the flower is approx. 8-12 mm. Common Field-Speedwell has the largest flower of the Speedwells described here.

Seed
Varying, asymmetrically mussel-shaped. The surface has irregular, sinuate lines across the dorsal side, which usually faces downwards, and an uneven, toothed edge. Thousand grain weight approx. 0.04 g.

Biology

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Summer and winter annual.

Importance

The plant is frequently found in both autumn- and spring-sown crops throughout Denmark. Dense, overwintering populations can be a hindrance to the early development and tillering of winter crops.
