Wall Speedwell

Can be mistaken for

Common Field-speedwell, which has larger dicotyledon leaves and true leaves.

Field Pansy, which has smooth true leaves.

Scarlet Pimpernel, which has red-brown dots on undersides of dicotyledon leaves and true leaves.

Characteristics

Cotyledons
Broad egg-shaped to almost triangular with entire leaf margins. Stalked. Smooth surface. Length approx. 3 mm.

True leaves
Egg-shaped with bluntly toothed leaf margins. Stalked. Hairy surface. Length approx. 7 mm.

Mature plant
The species is a small plant with 5-15 cm long, ascending to erect stems. The largest diameter of the flower is approx. 2-3 mm. Wall Speedwell can be distinguished from Common Field-Speedwell, Ivy-leaved Speedwell and Green Field-Speedwell by the arrangement of the flowers in terminal clusters having bracts (subtending leaves for the individual flowers), which differ clearly from typical true leaves. Seed production: Up to approx. 100 seeds per plant.

Seed
Flattened, oval, lenticular to lozenge-shaped with an oval, central, darkish ventral stigma. The surface is smooth or very slightly sinuately furrowed. Thousand grain weight approx. 0.04 g.

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Summer and winter annual.

Importance

Wall Speedwell is frequently found in both autumn- and spring-sown crops throughout Denmark. The species is usually considered one of the less important weed species.
