Characteristics

Early stages
Rolled vernation. The leaves are broad, flat and often twisting upwards from right to left. Long, patolous hairs can be seen on the leaf margin, especially towards the leaf base. No dentation. The ligule is long, up to approx. 6 mm.

Mature plant
Spring Wild-oat is a vigorous plant with 30-150 cm high, erect stems. The spikelets are joined in a large, open panicle. Long, kneed awns radiate from the spikelets in contrast to cultivated oat, which has no awns. Seed production: Up to approx. 250 seeds per plant.

Seed
Lancet-shaped to elliptical with a long, twisted, kneed awn, which emerges from about the middle of the domed bract. Kidney-shaped cross section. The base of ventral side has a horseshoe-shaped stigma. Sparsely to densely hairy surface. The hairs appear as stiff tufts, especially near the base, and usually hide the rachilla in the more or less slender ventral furrow. Naked, downy grains occur. Thousand grain weight approx. 22.5 g.

Biology

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Summer annual.

Importance

The species is frequently found in spring-sown crops, but can occasionally be found overwintering or germinating in the spring in autumn-sown crops. In all crops in which the plant is found, it is an injurious weed causing losses. In seed crops and in cereal for seed spring Wild-oat must not be present at all. Control of spring Wild-oat is compulsory in Denmark.
