Characteristics

Cotyledons
Oval to circular with entire leaf margins. A small notch is seen at the top of the leaf. Stalked. Sparsely hairy surface. Length approx. 4-6 mm.

True leaves
Oval to egg-shaped with sharply saw-toothed leaf margins. Stalked. The surface is covered with stinging hairs. Length approx. 10-12 mm.

Mature plant:
Annual Nettle is a medium-sized plant (15-40 cm high), which is known by its many stinging hair on stems and leaves. When coming into touch with the skin, the stinging hairs cause a passing, stinging pain. The diameter of the flower is approx. 1 mm. Seed production: Up to approx. 1,500 seeds per plant.

Seed
Almond- or inverted heart-shaped with compressed, oval cross section. Smooth, slightly glistening surface. The seed is sometimes surrounded by the perianth. Thousand grain weight approx. 0.5 g.

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Summer annual.

Importance

The species is found throughout Denmark. It is mostly found in late-sown spring crops such as Beet, Maize and a large number of horticultural crops. Annual Nettle is usually among the less important weed species.
