Can be mistaken for

Field Forget-me-not, which has somewhat smaller dicotyledon leaves and true leaves.

Characteristics

Almost oval with entire leaf margins. Stalked. The surface is covered with long hairs on the leaf top side, whereas the leaf underside is smooth. Length approx. 12-20 mm.

True leaves
Inverted egg-shaped with entire leaf margins. Unstalked. Very hairy surface. Length approx. 20-30 mm.

Mature plant
Bugloss is a small plant with a 20-40 cm high, erect stem. It is known by its stiff to almost bristly hairs all over the plant. If the blue petals are pulled out of the calyx, a white bent corolla tube can be seen. The diameter of the flower is approx. 5-7 mm. Seed production: Up to approx. 1,200 seeds per plant.

Seed
Shaped like a child’s shoe with oval cross section. The surface is very folded and nubbly. Thousand grain weight approx. 6.3 g.

Biology

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Summer annual, sometimes winter annual.

Importance

The species is found most frequently in spring-sown crops on sandy soil throughout Denmark. In cereal crops and Oil-seed Rape the plant usually has no major influence on yield. However, it can easily both be troublesome and cause losses in open crops.
