Wild Turnip

Can be mistaken for

Charlock, which has more grass-green true leaves with many hairs.

Oil-seed Rape, which has almost smooth true leaves.

Wild Radish, which has more grass-green true leaves with many hairs.

Characteristics

Cotyledons
Inverted kidney-shaped with entire leaf margins. Stalked. Smooth surface. Length approx. 7-10 mm.

True leaves
Inverted egg-shaped in outline, with more or less deep incisions in the leaf margins. Stalked. The surface is sparsely hairy. Length approx. 20-25 mm.

Mature plant
Wild Turnip can become a vigorous plant with an erect stem up to 80 cm high. The plant in many ways resembles Oil-seed Rape, but the stems and leaves are more hairy. The length of the petals is approx. 6-10 mm. Seed production: Up to approx. 2,000 seeds per plant.

Seed
Almost spherical. The surface is slightly pitted. Thousand grain weight approx. 2.0 g.

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Summer annual.

Importance

The species is occasionally found in spring-sown crops, but its distribution is decreasing. In all crops in which the plant is found it is an injurious weed, which causes losses. It is impossible to separate the seeds from Oil-seed Rape.
