Characteristics

Cotyledons
Oval in circumference, with two deep incisions. Stalked. The surface is sparsely hairy. Length approx. 8-11 mm.

True leaves
Egg-shaped outline, with many deep incisions and partings. Stalked. The surface is sparsely hairy. Length approx. 10-14 mm.

Mature plant
Stork’s-bill is a small plant with 10-30 cm long, more or less ascending stems. The plant is known by its very long bill-like fruits, hence the name. Diameter of the flower approx. 10-15 mm. Seed production: Up to approx. 600 seeds per plant.

Seed
Round, cone-shaped, often with a whorled awn at the top. The surface densely hispid. Thousand grain weight approx. 2.7 g.

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Summer and winter annual.

Importance

The species is frequently found in both autumn- and spring-sown crops throughout Denmark. The species is particularly common on sandy soil. In cereal crops and Oil-seed Rape the plant usually has no influence on yield. However, it can be quite troublesome in open crops, such as Beet.
