Characteristics

Early stages
The vernation is convolute. Limp, soft-haired leaves with distinctly 3-veined top- and underside. No dentation. The leaf sheath is soft-haired and fused (closed) to above the middle. The ligule is short, approx. 2 mm long and almost entire.

Mature plant
Soft Brome is a medium-sized plant with 10-40 cm high, ascending or erect stems. The spikelets are grouped in a panicle with erect top branches. The plant is soft-haired everywhere and feels soft to the touch, hence the name. Seed production: Up to approx. 1,800 seeds per plant.

Seed
Elliptical with a ”feed shovel”-shaped commissural surface and an approx. 5-8 mm long awn. The bract is 7-9-veined, convex with open lateral edges on the upper third. The rachilla is approx. 1 mm long, slightly curved with a bowl-shaped head. The ventral furrow is broad and flat-bottomed with a narrow longitudinal groove. The surface is short-haired on the rachilla and bract. Thousand grain weight approx. 3.6 g.

Biology

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Winter and summer annual, or biennial.

Importance

The species is common throughout Denmark. It is mostly found along field edges in both autumn- and spring-sown crops. In a number of grass seed crops the plant is undesirable because it is difficult to separate the seeds.
