Can be mistaken for

Cockspur, which does not have a ligule.

Characteristics

Early stages
Rolled vernation. The leaves are broad and flat. No dentation. The ligule is diffused into a fringe of ciliate hairs.

Mature plant
Green Bristle-grass is 15-40 cm high and often has numerous short, tufty shoots at the base. The plant only attains maximum development in very hot summers. The spikelets are arranged in dense cylindrical tufts with protruding Bristles between the spikelets. Seed production: Up to approx. 5,000 seeds per plant.

Seed
Egg-shaped outline. Domed dorsal side and flat to slightly domed ventral side with no rachilla or ventral furrow. The bract and bracteole are gristly, stiff and inflexible. The surface is finely granular with a regular weaving pattern, except on the two slim and bright side edges of the bracteole. The colour varies, usually dark-spotted. Thousand grain weight approx. 0.9 g.

Biology

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Summer annual.

Importance

Green Bristle-grass is a relatively new weed, which so far is only found locally in Beet and fields where only Maize is grown. As the species is sensitive to shade and needs heat to germinate (late germinating) as well as for further growth and development, it is expected to become a problem in open row crops.
