Mugwort

Can be mistaken for

Corn Chamomile, which has sectioned true leaves.

Corn Marigold, of which the first 2 true leaves are very long.

Pineapple-weed, of which the first 2 true leaves are very long.

Scentless Mayweed, which has pinnatisect true leaves.

Characteristics

Cotyledons
Oval with entire leaf margins. Unstalked. Smooth surface. Length approx. 4-5 mm.

True leaves
The first two true leaves are almost inverted egg-shaped with serrate leaf margins. Later true leaves have deep incisions in the leaf margin. Both types of leaves are stalked and the surface is densely covered with tomentose hairs. The length of the first true leaves is approx. 8-10 mm. The first true leaves of plants germinated from rootstock resemble the later true leaves of the seedling plants.

Mature plant
Mugwort can develop into a very vigorous plant with up to 150 cm high, erect stems. The species is known by its brown stem and white tomentose leaf undersides. The diameter of the flower head is approx. 3 mm. Seed production:
Up to approx. 700,000 seeds per plant.

Seed
Rod-shaped, broadest towards the top, which has a thin ring-shaped collar. The base is slightly pointed and often a little curved. The cross section is circular. The surface is slightly glistening with longitudinal, silvery stripes. Thousand grain weight approx. 0.1 g.

Propagation and dispersal
Through seeds and rhizomes.

Habit
Perennial.

Importance

Mugwort is frequently found in perennial meadows, seed fields and in reduced-tillage fields. In traditionally cultivated corn and Oil-seed Rape fields the plant is mainly found along field boundaries. The species is widespread throughout Denmark. In crops in which the plant can develop vigorously it is very troublesome and causes large losses. Only plants that are germinated from rhizomes develop this vigorously.
