Characteristics

Early stagesRolled vernation. The leaves are dull, rough and slender. No dentation. The ligule is somewhat frayed and very long, up to approx. 7 mm.
Mature plantLoose Silky-bent is a large plant with 40-80 cm high, erect straws. The small one-flowered spikelets (length approx. 2.5-3 mm) are joined in a large pyramidal panicle. Each spikelet has one 5-10 mm long awn. Seed production: Up to approx. 5,000 seeds per plant.
SeedLancet-shaped with a very long, thin awn. Kidney-shaped cross section. The bract is strongly domed and short, sparsely barbate on the upper part, but with fine hairy Bristles at the base. Very thin and short rachilla. Thousand grain weight approx. 0.1 g.

Biology

Propagation and dispersalOnly through seeds.
HabitWinter annual.

Importance

The species can be found on all types of soil. It is mainly found in autumn-sown crops, where it can cause severe losses at large densities. As Loose Silky-bent can be propagated very quickly in crop rotations with a large share of winter crops, it must be considered a very injurious weed.
