Characteristics

Cotyledons
Long and slender with entire leaf margins. Unstalked. Smooth surface. Length approx. 4 mm.

True leaves
The first true leaves are oval to egg-shaped with entire leaf margins. Stalked. The surface is covered with widely spaced hairs. Length approx. 5 mm. Later true leaves have deep incisions in the leaf margin. The later true leaves contain latex, which can be seen by squeezing a torn-off leaf.

Mature plant
Common Poppy is a high plant, approx. 20-80 cm, which is known by its large, red flowers, which during the summer are visible in winter crops, along roads and field boundaries. The diameter of the flower is approx. 50-80 mm. Seed production: Up to approx. 20,000 seeds per plant.

Seed
Kidney-shaped with egg-shaped cross section. Net-like, pitted surface. Thousand grain weight approx. 0.1 g.

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Summer and winter annual.

Importance

The species is most common on loamy soils in winter crops. In all crops in which the species is found it can cause quite heavy losses, even at small densities.
