Characteristics

Cotyledons
Oval with entire leaf margins. Unstalked. Smooth surface. Length approx. 8-12 mm.

True leaves
Oblong to oval outline with spiny leaf margins. Unstalked. Hairy surface. Length approx. 15-20 mm. The first true leaves of plants that are germinated from budding roots resemble the true leaves of young seedlings.

Mature plant
Creeping Thistle is a vigorous plant with 50-130 cm high, erect stems. It is especially known by the prickly spines on the leaves. The diameter of the flower head is approx. 15-25 mm. Seed production: Up to approx. 200 seeds per female flower head.

Seed
Asymmetrically pitcher-shaped with oval cross section. The broadest end with a collar and a pin-shaped remnant of the style. The surface is slightly ribbed and longitudinally grooved. Thousand grain weight approx. 1.2 g.

Propagation and dispersal
Through seeds and budding roots.

Habit
Perennial.

Importance

Creeping Thistle is common throughout Denmark in all crops. Only the vegetative stage of the plant is of influence as a weed, but at this stage the plant can be very troublesome and cause heavy losses.
