Characteristics

Early stages
Lower leaves are densely velvety-hairy with often reddish brown sheaths. Broad blades. The sheath is closed with small, distinct teeth.

Mature plant
The straw is 50-150 cm high and erect. Individual spikelets, two-rowed, with 2 narrow, awl-shaped glumes and 2 flowers with long awns from the bracts. Commonly grown in Denmark.

Biology

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Winter annual.

Importance

Occasionally as volunteers in subsequent crops.
