Characteristics

Cotyledons
Egg-shaped with entire leaf margins. A characteristic notch can be seen at the tip. Stalked. The surface is covered with small, hooked Bristles. Length approx. 8-15 mm.

True leaves
Inverted egg-shaped with entire leaf margins. Whorled. Stalked. The surface is covered with hooked bristles. Length approx. 7-9 mm.

Mature plant
Cleavers can develop into large and very spreading plants with up to 100 cm long, square stems, which can be both trailing and scrambling. The plant is known by the scrambling growth, the whorled true leaves and the many hooked Bristles, which let the plant cling easily to clothes, hands, other plants, etc. The diameter of the flower is approx. 2-3 mm. Seed production: Up to approx. 400 seeds per stem.

Seed
Ball-shaped to slightly oval with a depression on the commissural surface. The surface is hedgehog-like due to stiff, hooked Bristles, which can be more or less broken. Thousand grain weight approx. 3.7 g.

Biology

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Summer and winter annual.

Importance

The species is often found on loamy soils in both autumn- and spring-sown crops in the eastern part of Denmark. It is more thinly distributed in West and North Jutland. Cleavers must in all crops be considered a very injurious weed causing losses even at quite small densities; it can for example cause lodging.
