Can be mistaken for

Annual Meadow-grass, which is somewhat smaller and often has cross-wrinkled leaves.

Characteristics

Early stages
The vernation is valvate, and the sheaths are somewhat compressed. The leaves are thin and gradually pointed. The leaf apex is boat-shaped. If the leaves are held against a source of light, 2 light stripes are seen along the middle of the leaf. The ligule is very long, approx. 4-10 mm.

Mature plant
Rough Meadow-grass is a large plant with approx. 30-70 cm high, erect stems. The awnless spikelets are joined in an open panicle. The plant is distinguished from Smooth Meadow-grass by the very long ligule. Seed production: Up to approx. 2,000 seeds per plant.

Seed
Slender and elliptical with triangular cross section. The bract is sharply keeled, 5-veined with close-set teeth on the upper part of the central vein. Awnless. The base often has a tuft of woolly hair. The rachilla is round, very thin and smooth with a terminal collar. The ventral furrow is low and broad. Shelled seeds occur. Thousand grain weight approx. 0.2 g.

Biology

Propagation and dispersal
Mainly through seeds.

Habit
Perennial.

Importance

The plant is frequently found in autumn-sown crops throughout Denmark. In wet hollows or parts of the field Rough Meadow-grass can become very dominant. At large densities the plant can cause quite heavy losses in all crops. The plant is undesirable in seed fields with Smooth Meadow-grass as it is impossible to separate the seeds.
