Characteristics

Cotyledons
Oblong to lancet-shaped with entire leaf margins. Unstalked. Smooth surface. Length approx. 10-20 mm.

True leaves
Heart- to arrow-shaped with almost entire leaf margins. Stalked. Smooth surface. Length approx. 20-30 mm.

Mature plant
Black bindweed has 20-80 cm long stems, which are either trailing on the ground or twine round stems, straws and leaves of other plants. The species is especially known by its heart- to arrow-shaped true leaves. The diameter of the flower is approx. 2 mm. Seed production: Up to approx. 200 seeds per plant.

Seed
Almost triangular with three-sided cross section, where the sides often are somewhat concave. The surface is smooth to slightly rough, often covered with remnants of the perianth. Shelled seeds are frequent. Thousand grain weight approx. 5.0 g.

Biology

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Summer annual.

Importance

The species can occur in both autumn- and spring-sown crops throughout Denmark, but it is most troublesome in spring-sown crops. The plant is undesirable in cruciferous seed crops because it is difficult to separate the seeds.
