Brassica campestris L, which has more blue-green true leaves.
Brassica napus L., which has almost smooth true leaves.
Raphanus raphanistrum L., which has bigger dicotolydon leaves and true leaves.

Characteristics

Cotyledons
Inverted kidney-shaped with entire leaf margins. Stalked. Smooth surface. Length approx. 7-8 mm.

True leaves
Inverted egg-shaped in outline with more or less deep incisions in the leaf margins. Stalked. Hairy surface. Length approx. 20 mm.

Mature plant
Charlock is a vigorous plant with a 30-60 cm high, erect stem. The stem and leaves have stiff hairs. The colour of the leaves is typically grass-green; by contrast Oil-seed Rape and Wild Turnip have blue-green leaves. The diameter of the flower is approx. 10-15 mm. Seed production: Up to approx. 1,000 seeds per plant.

Seed
Spherical in both cross section and circumference. The surface is finely pitted. Thousand grain weight approx. 1.3 g.

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Summer annual.

Importance

The species is often found in spring-sown crops throughout Denmark. Even at small densities Charlock is an injurious weed species causing losses in any crop. It is impossible to separate the seeds from those of Oil-seed Rape.
