Chamomilla suaveolens

Can be mistaken for

Anthemis arvensis L., of which the first 2 true leaves have several incisions.

Artemisia vulgaris L., which has densely hairy true leaves.

Chrysanthemum segetum, which has blue-green dicotyledon leaves and true leaves.

Tripleurospermum inodorum (L.), of which the first 2 true leaves have several incisions.

Characteristics

Cotyledons
Oval with entire leaf margins. Unstalked. Smooth surface. Length approx. 2-4 mm.

True leaves
The first 2 true leaves are lancet-shaped to oblong in outline with entire leaf margins and 1-2 rough projections. Unstalked. Smooth surface, sometimes with a few hairs. Later true leaves are pinnatisect. Length approx. 10-20 mm.

Mature plant
Pineapple-weed is a small plant with 10-30 cm high, erect stems. The species resembles other Mayweeds, but is smaller and lacks the white ray florets in the flower head. The diameter of flower head is approx. 5-8 mm. Seed production: Up to approx. 5,000 seeds per plant.

Seed
Oblong pitcher-shaped and slightly curved. The surface has several longitudinal, slightly rounded ribs. Thousand grain weight approx. 0.3 g.

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Summer and winter annual.

Importance

The species can often be found in both autumn- and spring-sown crops throughout Denmark. In cereal crops and Oil-seed Rape, pineapple-weed usually has no influence on yield. However, it can be very troublesome in open crops.
