Characteristics

Cotyledons
Very oblong to lancet-shaped with entire leaf margins. Unstalked. Smooth surface. Length approx. 25 cm.

True leaves
Broad egg-shaped. Leaf margins with many deep incisions. Stalked. Smooth surface. Length approx. 15-30 mm.

Mature plant
Common fumitory is a medium-sized plant with 10-30 cm high, erect stalks. It is known by its high, conical inflorescences. Length of flower approx. 7-8 mm. Seed production: Up to approx. 1,600 seeds per plant.

Seed
Round to slightly heart-shaped. Almost circular cross section. The surface is granulated to wrinkled. Thousand grain weight approx. 3.4 g.

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Summer annual.

Importance

The species is mainly found on loamy soils throughout Denmark. It is occasionally found in open and/or late-sown spring crops. Only at higher densities can the plant cause losses, e.g. in Beet fields.
