Characteristics

Cotyledon
Broad egg-shaped to almost triangular, with entire leaf margins. Stalked. Smooth surface, but with a few hairs on the underside of the leaf. The leaf underside has reddish brown dots. Length approx. 3.5 mm.

True leaves:
Broad egg-shaped with entire leaf margins. Unstalked. Smooth surface. The leaf underside has characteristic reddish brown dots. Length approx. 7 mm.

Mature plant:
Scarlet pimpernel is a low-growing plant with 5-20 cm long, trailing stems. It is very easy to recognise by its leaf undersides, which have reddish brown dots. The diameter of the flower is approx. 4-7 mm. Seed production: Up to approx. 300 seeds per plant.

Seed
Pyramidal. The base of the pyramid may be oval, 3-, 5- or 6-sided. The surface is scaly rough or hairy. Thousand grain weight approx. 0.5 g.

Biology

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Summer annual.

Importance

The species is occasionally found on loamy soils in spring-sown crops throughout Denmark. The species is normally of no importance as a weed.
