Characteristics

Early stages
Lower leaves are velvety-hairy. Broad blades. The sheath is closed and has distinct teeth with large cilia.

Mature plant
The straw is 80-120 cm high and erect. Individual spikelets, two-rowed, with 2 broad, domed glumes keeled towards the point, with 3-5 flowers. In Denmark usually without long awns from the bract. Commonly grown.

Biology

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Summer and winter annual.

Importance

Occasionally as volunteers in subsequent crops.
