Characteristics

Cotyledons
Oval with entire leaf margins. Stalked. Smooth surface. Length approx. 5-10 mm.

True leaves
Oval to circular with slightly sinuate leaf margins. Stalked. Smooth surface. Length approx. 5-12 mm.

Mature plant
Field Penny-cress is a medium-sized plant (15-30 cm), known by its large coin-shaped fruits. The diameter of the flower is approx. 3-4 mm. Seed production: Up to approx. 900 seeds per plant.

Seed
Oval in circumference, but compressed from the side. The surface is furrowed in parallel, curving rows. Thousand grain weight approx. 1.8 g.

Propagation and dispersal
Only through seeds.

Habit
Summer and winter annual.

Importance

Field Penny-cress is frequently found in both autumn- and spring-sown crops throughout Denmark. A dense population of this species may lead to yield loss even in competitive crops such as cereals and Oil-seed Rape.
