Can be mistaken for

Perennial Rye-grassthat is morphologically identical but not resistant to fop/dim- and ALS-herbicides

Resistance to herbicides

There have been significant populations of this weed in Denmark, which requires special considerations in the control. Read more here.

Characteristics

"Early stagesFolded vernation. The leaves seem soft and limp. The underside of the leaves are highly shiny. Small-toothed leaves. The ligule is short, approx. 1 mm. The lower leaf sheaths are often reddish purple.
Mature plantPerennial Rye-grass is a medium-sized grass species with 20-50 cm high, erect, highly shiny stems. The awnless spikelets are joined in an open, oblong spike. The edge of the spikelets faces the straw unlike Couch-grass, where the surface of the spikelet faces the straw.
Seed production: Up to approx. 150 seeds per spike.

Biology

Propagation and dispersalMainly through seeds.
HabitPerennial.

Importance

The species is frequently found at properties where it is part of the crop rotation as either roughage or seed crop. As a weed Rerennial Ryegrass can be found in all types of crops, where it can cause some losses at large densities. Perennial Rye-grass is undesirable in seed fields with Cocksfoot, Meadow Fescue and Red Fescue because it is difficult to separate the seeds.
